Welcome to Mahahual

Mahahual and the Costa Maya is the new favorite vacation destination on Mexico's Caribbean Coast. Mahahual is the Hidden Jewel of the Yucatan Peninsula.

This small fishing village located on the beautiful turquoise Caribbean Sea is just south of Playa del Carmen and Tulum and boasts white powdery beaches and temperatures ranging from 78-85F every day of the year.

With a nice highway from Cancun's International Airport, the drive to Mahahual is easy. There are many beautiful attractions along the way including the historic ruins of Tulum and Coba.

If you arrive at Costa Maya on a cruise ship you'll have been encouraged to take an organized excursion rather than do your own thing. Our advice would be walk straight through the tourist shops alongside the port, grab a taxi outside and in 5 minutes and at a cost of $2 per person US you'll arrive in Mahahual.
The cruise ships will tell you that Mahahual is not safe. This is because they want you to shop and eat at the port owned mall and shops. Mahahual is very safe - Go enjoy!

Come listen to the soothing sounds of the Caribbean. Here "life slows." It's time to leave the crowds of Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum and enjoy the natural beauty and authenticity of this quaint village.

Mahahual offers small hotels in the heart of the town and luxurious vacation villas on its secluded beaches. There are grocery stories, restaurants and many of the activities you'll find in any great Beach Vacation Destination...all without the crowds!

We're here to help you have a great time!
There are many sites in Mahahual and the Costa Maya
The coastal lands between Tulum and Xcalak are an explorers' paradise. Unspoiled mangrove estuaries and marshlands just back from the beach, are hatcheries for hundreds of species of fish. These ecosystems provide world-class saltwater flats fishing for anglers, and fertile feeding grounds for migratory birds that fly between the United States and Central and South America. After fishing or bird watching, check out the Ruins in the south end of Quintana Roo. Head out of the Mahahual town center into the interior of the peninsula. The Mayan ruins of Chacchoben are very close to the town of Limones with the Mayan ruins of Kohunlich and Dzibanche just to the south.

There is lots to do in Mahahual and summer is a great time to visit. There are no crowds!
Mahahual’s Popularity Rises

Mahahual, a laid-back fishing village that grows a few days each month when the cruise ships arrive, is growing into one of Mexico’s top tourism and retirement destinations. The town is looking forward to an exciting summer as the cruise ships will only arrive a couple of times a month. This means the crowds will be gone and the summer months will let Mahahual get back to the fishing village it loves to be. (The best time to visit)
This area of Mahahual and the Costa Maya has many alternatives to the towering all-inclusive resorts that line the beaches of Cancun and Play del Carmen. Accommodations in Mahahual range from camping and boutique hotels to luxury villas.
Direct flights from most US cities into Cancun International are how most arrive and then make the drive to Mahahual on the all new and improved roads. The city of Chetumal has been working to expand the Chetumal International airport as well. When completed the drive will be 1.5 hours to Mahahual.

If you plan to visit, make your reservations early.

Taxis to Mahahual
There are two ways to get into Mahahual from your ship. (Taxi or Port Shuttle) Taxis are located 100 yards outside the port's exit, and port shuttle transports are located inside the port.
Most port employee can help you find the shuttles but will not help you find the Taxis.
Ask for the "port exit", not a "taxi", or you will be directed to the shuttle. Shuttles are easier to find, but take a lot longer because of all the stops before you reach the center of town. These cost $3 US per person. Important!! Shuttles only go into the downtown. You must take a taxi back to the ship. Taxis are faster and cheaper, $2 US per person.
Whichever you take, you will want to get off near the center of town. This is where you will see a small soccer field and basketball dome. You can get off there and head one street to the beach. At the beach is the Malecon or (walking path) no cars. Here you can walk left or right to enjoy all the restaurants, bars and shops.

Driving to Mahahual
1.You can rent a car from any of the major rental agencies. Enterprise, Thrifty, Avis, National or Fox re located at the airport.
2.It’s not a good idea to try and drive to Mahahual when it starts to get dark. There are no street lights, so the drive is very dark.
3.What we like to do is drive about 45 min to 1 hour south to the town of Akumal. You can rent a room at the hotel or bungalow at Hotel Akumal Caribe.
4.Once you get your rental car, you drive out of the airport and head south on Hwy 307 towards, Playa del Carmen, Akumal and Tulum.
5.If you choose to stay in Akumal, you can enjoy dinner and drinks at the Lol-Ha Restaurant and bar right on the beach, next to the hotel.
6.In the morning you can have breakfast and then drive about 15 min south to Tulum where you can stop at the big grocery store Chedraui.
7.After picking up an ice chest (about 4.00usd) along with your food and drinks, you drive about 2 hours to the Mahahual turn off.
It’s easy and there are stops you can make along the way for food, drinks, gas, visit the Ruins, etc.
We like to leave Mahahual a day before our flight back to the US. We usually find a cheap hotel in Cancun on This way were only about 15 min from the airport on the day we have to depart. (we don’t like to rush the drive back to the Cancun airport the same day as our flight) Use this time to visit a few sites.
